Voice pedagogy coach

  • Have you got a Bachelor’s, Masters, or Doctoral degree but feel you still have gaps in your training?
  • Did you learn classical voice technique but find yourself in a private studio needing to teach contemporary and music theatre styles, and are not sure how to approach this?
  • Are you a new voice teacher who doesn’t know where to start?
  • Have you had high level training in your desired style, but need help transitioning to sing other styles?
  • Are you teaching, but there is something niggling in your own voice, or in your student’s voices, and you don’t know how to fix it?

Book in now for private. bespoke voice pedagogy training. I love working with other voice teachers! One of the outcomes from my PhD study was an understanding of the value of collegiality and being able to discuss and explore voice pedagogy in application with other teachers. While in academia there may be a variety of different teachers with different approaches we can observe and draw from, once we are out in the world and teaching in solo studios, we lose the richness that comes from observing a diversity of practice.

Over the past twenty years I have had many voice teachers come through my studio for voice lessons, for voice pedagogy lessons, or for additional training following post-graduate study. I specialise in working with voice teachers who have a classical background, helping in the application of Contemporary and Musical Theatre voice pedagogy. All consultations with voice teachers may be conducted online (many teachers I work with are international) or in person.

We start by meeting to determine exactly what you feel you need from the lessons. The process involves voice lessons for the teacher plus pedagogical theory and resources when required.

I also provide:

  • Team teaching—where we both work with a student!
  • Supervised teaching for practical feedback on teaching approach.
  • Audition preparation for graduate training.
  • Filling the gap between physiological knowledge and application.
  • Private studio business advice.
  • Specific style teaching advice.
  • Improving problem solving skills.
  • Teaching observation skills.
  • Discussion and further reading suggestions.

My work with teachers is based on research, a dedication to continuing professional development in my own work, and twenty years of successful voice teaching in a private studio. I have also worked in high schools, and universities, with absolute beginners to professionals, and with all ages from children to mature adults. I have worked with students as they transition to being professional performers or singing teachers themselves, or both!

Testimonials

Training my voice with Dale has been one of the best decisions I have made in my adult life. As a professional performer and teacher, I have been in search for someone like Dale for a long time. Her background, training, technique and commitment to excellence balanced with the openness and warmth of her instruction has solidified a trust I have not found with many other teachers. I feel safe to play and explore new sounds, always knowing that I have a true expert guiding me in the direction of healthy, sustainable sound. I leave every lesson with a greater sense of freedom and understanding of vocal function, not to mention truly tangible progress. Anyone who has the opportunity to work with Dale should consider themselves extremely fortunate and immediately jump at the chance. She is the real deal.

I am currently working fulltime as a singing teacher to primary and high school aged students on the Gold Coast. Recently, I have been undertaking weekly lessons with Dale to improve my understanding of my own voice and to apply her knowledge to my students. As a graduate of Griffith University Conservatorium’s post graduate course of Certificate of Music in Vocal Pedagogy (2012), I value the importance of continuing study as a vocal performer and teacher.

Although Dale’s studio is in North Brisbane, the weekly drive has been worth it due to the significant and measurable progress in not only my own voice, but the voices of all of my students as well. From our very first lesson, I could tell that Dale’s impressive knowledge of not only Musical Theatre but how to teach Musical Theatre singers specifically, was far superior to the tertiary level teachers I had encountered before. Her efficient teaching style not only had me singing through problematic areas in my own voice by the end of our very first lesson – but she has also been responsible for unveiling a stronger, warmer, more free and flexible sound. In addition, I have had significant breakthroughs with many long time students since implementing Dale’s holistic approach to the voice. Students are having more fun and the joy on their faces at their sudden rapid progress has been especially rewarding.

Dale’s style of teaching is supportive, engaging and incredibly easy to implement. Her commitment to keeping singing joyous and her ability to encourage curiosity and playfulness in the singing studio makes lessons with her enjoyable. I walk away from each lesson feeling as if I have progressed significantly from the week before and with a clear direction of what to focus on that week.

Lessons with Dale have consolidated the theory I learnt through the Vocal Pedagogy Course into a more practical application, which has been easy to implement immediately. I am so grateful I have been able to have the opportunity to learn from Dale.

I can honestly say that Dale has been such an inspiration to me as a singer and a teacher, to strive for excellence and to be the best I can be in both these roles, as she does. She is highly respected by her colleagues and adored by her students, and is a leader in the professional voice world, respected both nationally and internationally. Many voice teachers seek Dale’s professional mentoring, experience and knowledge on their own career paths.
